BALTIMORE, MD, May 13, 2025 – Researchers who took a close look at loosened concealed carry laws between 2010 and 2017 have found that “Shall Issue” regulations, which remove local authority discretion on the issuance of concealed carry gun permits, contribute to a significant increase in handgun purchases. At the same time, the researchers found that in states that adopted “Permitless Carry” policies, there was no noticeable change in gun purchases.

DALLAS (SMU) – Screening protocols to determine who qualifies for “compassionate dialysis” in hospitals with high numbers of uninsured patients are driving an unintended consequence, an SMU analysis has found. The protocols are putting too much strain on the emergency room, as measured by how long ER patients are waiting to be seen and other metrics.

Richard O'Neill is a distinguished senior fellow at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, Martin Reiman is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University and Nikolaos Sahinidis is the Gary C. Butler Family Chair and professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. They join more than 100 new members recently elected.
